Work and life: the right question

You can’t truly split life and work: meaning, stress, people, body. Maybe the point isn’t whether we work to live or live to work—but whether the life we’re building still holds up while we’re on the job.

Do we work to live, or live to work?

It’s a question that keeps coming back — but maybe it isn’t even the right one.

The reality is you can’t really separate life from work.

We spend most of our waking hours working — the hours when we’re most present, sharpest, most alive. If those hours feel wrong, the rest of the day and the weekends rarely make up for it.

Meaning, not only enjoyment

Over time I learned that having a job or doing what you like isn’t enough. Something subtler matters.

You need to feel that what you do has meaning — that you’re not just trading time for money, but contributing, creating, leaving a mark, even a small one.

Tension

You also can’t live in constant stress.

When every month is a sprint, when decisions are made with anxiety on your back, it’s hard to build any balance. Your mind is always defending, never imagining.

People

Then there are the people — the ones you work with every day, sharing problems, responsibility, wins.

Relationships aren’t a sidebar: they’re central to how we experience work and, often, to the quality of life outside it.

The body

Finally there’s the body, which we often ignore until it sends the bill.

Energy, clarity, mood — it all runs through there. When the body is tired, the mind follows. If you don’t take care of yourself, it’s hard to sustain any long-term project.

A life that holds

Today I live and work in a fairly unconventional way — I don’t see that as a trophy, but as the outcome of choices aimed at a balance that works for me.

Maybe the point isn’t deciding whether we work to live or live to work.

Maybe the point is asking whether the life we’re building still holds up while we work — because work, like it or not, is a huge part of it.
